Overview
The staff of the Department of Human Resources's Summit - Center for State Employee Development provides effective, low-cost consultation services to assist managers in addressing specific challenges and issues. The consultation services most often requested by managers are:
ORGANIZATIONAL ASSESSMENT -- Assessing how well an organization is operating is critical to on-going improvement and organizational effectiveness. Learning Center staff can help you evaluate common perceptions of the organization's strengths and areas for improvement and make recommendations for next steps. Typical steps in the assessment process include: 1) Meet with management to agree on goals for the process. 2) Gather information including interviewing individual staff. 3) Present findings and recommendations. 4) Follow through work with group and/or management.
TEAM DEVELOPMENT - Today, more than ever, staff need to work collectively toward common goals. Sometimes team development requires deliberate effort. Our team development services typically involve: assessment (How do staff see the team? How clear are individuals about the purpose of the group and their roles?); group facilitation on goals, roles, and how to operate most effectively; skill development.
ON-SITE CUSTOM-DESIGNED TRAINING -- Training together as a work group develops common skills and promotes group support for using new skills and behaviors. Topics often requested include: customer service, communication skills, conflict management, building a healthy work environment, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), preventing sexual harassment and more. But we teach in many other areas as well. If we cannot provide you with the service we'll refer you to individuals who can.
RESTRUCTURING ASSISTANCE -- Restructuring an organization for maximum effectiveness is an important and sometimes daunting task. Consulting staff in The Summit - Center for State Employee Development help you clarify your proposal and identify staff transition and development issues; and, as part of the Department of Human Resources, coordinate your restructuring plans with appropriate staff in Employee Relations and Classification to answer your questions. You may refer to the Restructuring in Vermont State Government Guide as a first step in thinking about restructuring.
