AT FOR IT: GETTING AT IT

:: IT workers cannot do their jobs without interacting with computers. Yet some of the people we work with can't see the text on the screen very well, or the icons are too small, or the screen flickers. Do we change screen resolution or dpi? How do we help someone who can't use the keyboard efficiently because of a physical disability? How do we, as IT professionals, address genuine needs for customization in a world where standardization is a mantra? This workshop reveals some of the underutilized features and settings in Microsoft products, and examines some third-party assistive technology tools, demonstrating how these can be used to help people with disabilities achieve a higher level of independence and efficiency in their daily computing.

BEYOND READING GLASSES: ACCOMMODATING THE AGING WORKFORCE

:: As the Baby Boom generation grows older and works longer, our abilities change and exposure to workplace risks, such as RSI, increase. Large numbers of workers face difficulties or acquire disabilities related to seeing, hearing, moving, remembering, and so on. By desire or by circumstance, we wish to remain productive members of the workforce. This workshop features guest speakers addressing typical needs of an aging workforce, low tech and high tech assistive technology, and typical policies and procedures for requesting and implementing workplace accommodations. We will also discuss existing legislation and helpful resources relating to both employers and employees.

However, tapping best practice and creatively engaging employees and customers can help the planning process revitalize your agnency. Finally, we will identify ways in which to help the plan serve as a vital guide to the organization once in place. You will walk away with a fresh roap map for planning for your organization.

BUILDING EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT

:: How well you train your employees directly effects their engagement with the organization's mission and ability to feel successful in performing their job functions. When an employee does not seem to "pick it up" quickly, an easy assumption is that he or she is not trying or motivated enough. But what if that employee simply has a different way of learning than you, or than the way you are training them?

After identifing your own learning and training style, you will have a hands-on experience of the the challenges and opportunities of four primary learning styles. You will learn the basics of how to apply these styles to your training methods for both current and new employess. The four learning styles are developed from the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) theory to ensure their validity to personal preferences with regard to adult learning.

BUSINESS BASICS IN GOVERNMENT

:: Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about how State of Vermont departments and agencies conduct their business! A very successful pilot was held in November of 2007 for this class, with over 25 participants giving rave reviews and input. This class would be interesting and valuable for a broad range of participants including new business administrators/managers, administrative support people interested in a broad overview of business operations, or even a Secretary, Commissioner, Deputy, or Director with accountability for the business of an agency, department, or division. Others who may be interested include those working in a financial position that may be aspiring to be business managers and business managers who wish to brush up in key areas or expand their scope. The overview is presented chronologically, based on the State’s fiscal cycle, from the preparation of the budget through the close out and completion of the Consolidated Annual Financial Report (CAFR). Topics covered include: budget development; legislative budget approval process; new budget implementation; budget monitoring; monthly and year-end closing procedures; audits; state procurement process; federal grants administration; and records management. The class is presented by a team of state business managers and subject-matter experts from across state government.

EFFECTIVE PRESENTATION BOOT CAMP: MAKE YOUR NERVOUS ENERGY WORK FOR YOU

:: Speaking well in front of people – the ability to influence and persuade, to come across as competent, credible, and even inspirational – is a critical skill. The ability to clearly articulate your ideas can make the difference between having your ideas accepted or rejected. In addition, the way you express yourself influences not only acceptance or rejection, but how inspired people are to support those ideas.

This workshop is designed to help participants get the results they want when speaking to small or large groups of people. The focus is on delivery skills and strategies for getting stage fright under control – making nervous energy work for you. We practice ways to look at an audience and build rapport, ways to use your voice for inflection and emphasis, and ways to use your body to create visual interest and understanding. While the emphasis is on physical skills, we also discuss the importance of audience analysis and content development. We cover strategies for clarifying purpose, assessing audience needs, developing content, using visuals, and delivering your message.

Called "Boot Camp", this course encourages you to take risks and "try on" new skills in a respectful, fun and safe environment. Participants practice the skills, blend them with their unique styles, and receive feedback from the facilitator and fellow participants. They also receive video feedback so they “see and hear” their actual presentations. The workshop's only prerequisite is a willingness to try out new strategies.

These techniques will be studied and practiced, but with a constant awareness of the need for efficiency in order to address the time constraints in our work lives.

FUNDAMENTALS OF PROCESS MANAGEMENT

:: Process improvement is the "final frontier" to streamlining and improving organizational efficiency. Employees get frustrated when the process they use causes delays, problems, waste and other non-value activity. Dr. Deming, the quality guru who gave Japan their momentum with quality management estimates that 85% of the problems have to do with a poor process, and not the skills, ability or motivation of the employees who use the process.

This course will give you the fundamentals of quality management, with a focus on the process improvement methods, tools and templates for completing a process improvement project. In addition, the skills and techniques for starting, leading and developing process improvement teams will be covered.

KEEPING 'EM COMING BACK WITH CUSTOMER SERVICE - WOW!

:: In the workplace, everybody's a stakeholder and everybody's a customer. This includes external clients, consumers, suppliers and vendors as well as internal colleagues from the same work unit or from other departments. Superb customer service is the way you keep your customers happy and coming back. It's also the way you build a reputation for excellence. The ability to build rapport quickly, understand what customers want and respond to those needs effectively (even when you can't provide the thing they want) is essential. This workshop will help you: ? Wow your customers by better understanding how to provide the kind of service that consistently exceeds expectations. ? Manage customer expectations (especially when what they want really is impossible to provide). ? Be reminded of what excellent customer service looks, sounds and feels like. ? Understand what both external and internal customers want and why. ? Put into use techniques for building rapport quickly. ? Put into use strategies for defusing angry or difficult customers. ? Strategize how to deal with challenging scenarios that you face with unhappy customers.

LEADING THROUGH LIMBO

:: The transition time, says William Bridges, is the in-between time when you are the new leader, or the department has been re-organized, and organizational life suddenly seems in limbo. At such times, it helps to reflect upon what we all go through in the unsettling in-between time. It helps to know that change processes typically have a life cycle that you can prepare people for and lead people through. Bring a change you are leading or assisting with; reflect, learn and use the wisdom of the class group to help you with the specific challenge you face.

LET'S TALK: HOW TO MANAGE CONFLICT & COMMUNICATE

:: Ninety three percent of communication is unspoken. Therefore, techniques are of limited usefulness if in our minds we are still judging and blaming the other person. This communications and conflict management training goes beyond simple techniques and challenge you to examine the habitual ways of thinking and being that you bring to the conversations you dread the most. By helping you deepen your awareness of what you bring to the table, we will support you to develop new approaches capable of shifting the way these emotional exchanges unfold. All the skills and mindsets learned will be applied to the real conflicts in your life to insure that the learning is transferable. If you either avoid conflict, or dive into it with rough edges, this training is for you.
