The Governor's Workforce Equity & Diversity Council (GWEDC) was created by Executive Order to lead the State's efforts in the areas of Affirmative Action and Diversity by acting as a consultant and advisor to the Commissioner of Personnel and the Secretary of Administration. The mission of the GWEDC calls for a greater focus on supporting a workplace culture that promotes equitable treatment for all, and one that embraces the true value workplace diversity offers.
The makeup of the Council is set by the Executive order: representatives from designated State entities (Department of Human Resources, Attorney General's Office, Commission on Women, Department of Aging and Disabilities); the State employees' union (Vermont State Employees' Association, Inc.); and ten members appointed by the Governor. Three of the ten Governor-appointed members are at-large representatives of the state workforce. The remaining seven of those appointees are people who either belong to or work with members of historically disadvantaged groups.
In addition to working to advance the goals of Affirmative Action and Diversity, the Council is required to assist the Commissioner of Personnel in preparing the State's annual Affirmative Action Plan and annual report of progress under the proceeding year's Affirmative Action Plan.
