Compensation
The State of Vermont pays employees every two weeks, on alternate Thursdays, unless the pay date falls on a holiday, in which case the pay date will be Wednesday. As a new employee, you will not receive a paycheck until your fourth week of employment because you are paid for work performed during the previous pay period.

Expenses, which are authorized by your supervisor and incurred in the conduct of state business, are reimbursed. Typical expenses include: mileage and costs related to out-of-town business travel such as lodging and meals. Additional information can be found at: Personnel Policy 18.0 and in the collective bargaining agreements. Your supervisor will explain the timesheet and expense reimbursement process during your department orientation. If you need further assistance, contact your personnel officer: State HR Staff.

Your position has been assigned to one of twenty-seven pay grades from pay grade five to thirty-two. Each pay grade contains fifteen steps between the minimum (step one) and the maximum (step fifteen). Refer to the pay chart for specific salary information.

New employees can expect to start at step one and advance to step two after satisfactorily completing their six-month probation. As long as your work performance is satisfactory, you can expect to receive a step increase annually until you reach step six. Increases are then granted every two years from step six through twelve and every three years from step thirteen through fifteen. Cost of living raises are negotiated with the State Employees Union (VSEA) and approved by the legislature. More information is available at: Personnel Policy 12.0
